11 Things To Do In Pavones, Besides Surfing

Let’s face it, people come to Pavones, Costa Rica for the world class wave but what most people seem to overlook are the many other fun activities. Let’s take a look.

  1. Learn spanish

Pavones is a great place to learn Spanish because of the laid back serene atmosphere. Finding a teacher is easy and this will allow you to leave Pavones with a priceless skill that will benefit you for the rest of your life.

2. Watch a game at Nick’s Place Restaurant

Sometimes it’s nice just to sit back with a beer or a smoothie and watch a game at Nick’s Place. Nick always has all of the big games and fights on. Soccer, NFL, NBA, UFC, MLB or a classico game can always be found playing on the biggest TV in the town. The place fills up rapidly when a World cup or Olympic game is on. It’s nice to know this exists in a small town mainly devoted to surfing.

3. Fishing or dolphin tour

Surfing isn’t the only thing that’s world class in Pavones, the fishing is also some of the best in the world. The ocean offers a variety of different types of fish including; yellow fin tuna, mahi mahi, grouper & snapper among many others. If fishing isn’t your thing, you can still go searching for whales and dolphins with a beer in your hand.

4. Horseback tour

Take a horseback tour on the beach or up the mountain. It’s a somber way to explore the beautiful nature. Up the mountain you can spot sloths and monkeys while the beach tour is a tranquil ride to a small waterfall.

5. Ride down the river

This one is for the adventurer. Rent air tubes, a tour guide for safety and hike up the mountain. Take it from someone who has done it, riding down the river is a life changing experience. You will be sure to see monkeys and wildlife in a beautiful scenic ride down the Rio Claro de Pavones and when you come out on the other end, you will feel like a new person.

6. Go to a rodeo

Rodeos can be found mostly in the high season but because of covid they have become less frequent. Rodeos are a must-do for someone who has never been to one. It’s traditional for the locals to get right in the ring with the bulls and run around with them, elevating the thrill level even higher than your average rodeo.

7. Watch a local soccer game

Again, because of covid, soccer matches have been suspended but when things do go back to normal (hopefully soon) you will find that, Pavones has a boys and a girls soccer team. Soccer games are a great way to experience being part of the Costa Rican culture. Nothing is better than a town rivalry like Pavones versus Punta Banco.

8. Enjoy the beach

Pavones is a tropical paradise. In Pavones, it’s not uncommon to have the entire beach to yourself. Taking a walk down the beach is one of the simpler and enjoyable pleasures that Pavones has to offer. Doing yoga or simply meditating on the beach is great way to relieve stress and anxiety. Meditation has been scientifically proven to generate kindness, which could be why Costa Rica is so often rated the happiest country in the world.

9. Watch the sunset

Stop thinking so much and enjoy the sunset. The Pavones sunset is incredible any time of the year.

10. Skate!

No waves? No problem. Pavones now has a half pipe located by the point. Skate and make friends with the locals while waiting for the waves to reload.

11. Learn the real meaning of ‘Pura Vida’

Unlike touristy places like Jaco, Pavones is the real definition of pura vida. A small town filled with friendly faces will make you feel right at home. If you’re looking to unplug from real life for a while give Pavones a try.

CONCLUSION

Pavones is one of the best places in the world to surf but also still has a lot more to offer, with a tranquil, small town, ‘pura vida’ vibe which is unmatched in the rest of the country. Come visit and see for yourself!
